Creative Project: Demo Day Prep
Contents
Icebreaker (10-15 min)
Start the class with an icebreaker or warm-up game .
Stand-up Meeting (5-10 min)
Just like last time , have each team hold a stand-up meeting. As a reminder, each student should answer the following questions:
- What did I achieve last session that helped us meet our planned goals?
- What will I work on today to help us meet our planned goals?
- What challenges am I facing that may block us from meeting our planned goals?
Once students are comfortable with this format, you might introduce some other questions:
- Do you need anything from anyone here in order to proceed?
- Is this harder/easier than what you thought? Can someone else help?
If you need to adjust your task priorities, do so at the end of the meeting.
Good Enough to Demo
During your stand-up, when thinking about priorities, talk through the items that need to be done in order to make the website "good enough to demo".
There may be certain features that don't work in real life (such as submitting a form). As long as you can visually show the result of your HTML and CSS for that feature, that's good enough to demo.
Note that students may also work on their websites at home during the week if they wish. They can bring their folders home with them at the end of the session.
Finish coding (30-45 min)
Take some time to allow students to finish their websites. Mentors will need to be extra diligent in keeping students focused on their tasks.
Presentation prep (30-45 min)
Plan
Students should have a Presentation Planning Worksheet in their folders. Each team need only fill out one worksheet.
IMPORTANT: Please assign one mentor to be in charge of collecting the worksheets at the end of the session. This mentor must bring the worksheets to demo day so the students can refer to them during the presentation!
The worksheets are divided into three sections:
- Introduce your website
- Demo your website and code
- Talk about your experience
Each presentation is only 5-6 minutes, so try not to spend more than 2 minutes on each section.
Practice
Practice the presentations. If you have a projector on site, hook a laptop to the projector.
Make sure the audience can see the code as well as the website. Students can also show what the site looks like in "full screen" by clicking the "open in new tab" button:
Surveys and Mentor Nominations (5-10 min)
Please have students complete our survey. We use this data to improve ideaSpark and to measure Bold Idea's impact.
Survey links are also available on front page of http://wiki.boldidea.org for quick access |
