Last Session Before Demo Day
Contents
Before the session
- Print off a copy of the presentation planning worksheet for each student team. You might print some extras just in case they're needed.
-
Students will need to fill out their survey and mentor nominations at some point during the session. Write the URLs on the whiteboard so it's easy for them to find:
- Post-survey: https://boldidea.org/ideaspark-post-survey
- Nominate a mentor: https://boldidea.org/nominate
Stand-up Meeting [5-10 min]
Have your team review what's left to do for your demo.
Good Enough to Demo
- During your stand-up, when thinking about priorities, talk through the items that need to be done in order to make the website "good enough to demo".
- There may be certain features that don't work quite like you'd hoped. That's OK! The goal of the demo is for students to share their journey of learning to code in Python.
- Students may also work on their games at home during the week if they wish, but don't depend on that for the demo in case things don't go as planned during the week. Instructions for setting up at home can be found here . Students can bring their folders home with them at the end of the session.
Finish coding [50 min]
Finish up any remaining work needed for your demo.
Position your Player
For the demo, if you want your player to start out at a specific location, be sure to put a line of code in your script that sets the player's position. This will help make things run more predictably.
Post-survey & Nominations [5 min]
At some point during the session, have students fill out the post-survey and nominate a mentor:
- Post Survey URL: https://boldidea.org/ideaspark-post-survey
- Nominate mentor URL: https://boldidea.org/ideaspark-post-survey
The post-survey is particularly important, as it is our primary source of data on how program impacts our students. |
Presentation prep [30-45 min]
Plan
Give each team a presentation planning worksheet to fill out.
IMPORTANT:
Please assign one mentor to be in charge of collecting the worksheets at the end of the session. Students will need their worksheets at Demo Day.
If they want to take them home, make a digital backup by taking photos of each page on w/ your phone and post it to your slack channel. |
The worksheets are divided into three sections:
- Introduce your idea
- Demo your game and code
- Talk about your experience
Each presentation is only 5-6 minutes, so try not to spend more than a couple minutes on each section.
Practice
Practice the presentations using a projector if available.
At Demo Day, we will have one laptop set up with a freshly-generated Minecraft world that looks just like the one you started with on the first mission (except there will be no pit). The screen will be projected onto a bigger screen for the audience to see. In one window we’ll open your code files in the IDLE editor. We will have the python shell opened in a smaller window below the code, and the Minecraft game will be on the right.
Using a Microphone: Students will be using a handheld mic during Demo Day. Share the following tips on using a microphone:
Register your project & upload your code
In order for us to queue up the projects on demo day, you'll need to register your project and upload your code. Click the link below for instructions on how to do this. If you have any issues logging into Google Drive, text or call Ben at 972-415-6277.
Plan B: If you're not able to get Google Drive backup to work, create a .zip file by right-clicking on their code folder in the file manager and select "Create Archive". Then, email that .zip file to ben@boldidea.org or post on Slack.
